One Direction have been forced to stop inviting fans on stage – after three became victims of a jealous online hate campaign. The vicious messages were sent to Hollie Gilbert, 20, and two others who were serenaded by the heartthrobs at their UK tour’s opening night last month. They had been chosen at random after an invitation on the Twitter website. But Hollie and the two other winners, aged 15 and 17, immediately started to get abusive messages, including: “I think you’re pathetic”, “You’re not even pretty, why did Harry choose you?” and “You’re kinda rat-faced.” The hate messages against Hollie and her fellow winners were so bad that the band, X Factor winners in 2010, have scrapped plans to get fans on stage at other gigs on the tour. Fashion student Hollie, from Hertfordshire, had camped overnight to get her tickets for the opening night in Watford on December 18. She and the other two winners were taken to their own dressing room and allowed to pick a dress and tiara for a romantic, candle-lit scene as part of the show. Hollie said: “I was partnered with Harry. Then they sang to us wearing tuxes. Harry was really sweet. The jealous messages began almost straight away. “I think it’s because I was partnered with Harry, the most popular member.” Hollie added: “I’ve tried to ignore the messages. But it’s a shame as the band have now cut the whole fan interaction scene from the routine.” A One Direction spokesman said: “The girls were brought up on stage for a warm-up show at the beginning of the tour as a try. It didn’t work out from a practical point of view.”
